The fame of VoIP may sound instant but it is fact that they have existed for some time before. Voice over internet protocol or VoIP refers to the ability to transfer audio as data packets over the Internet to a computer, VoIP phone or a traditional telephone. VoIP has escaped from the various regulations as it is a new concept and very different from that of telephone systems.
The main difference between the telephone lines and VoIP is the difference in their functions. That is in telephony systems or PSTN or the Public Switched Telephone Network, it uses Circuit Switching networks which is connected through wires. Whereas the VoIP is technology based on Packet Switching and is transferred over the Internet. Federal regulations have been put forwarded and the government is trying hard to regulate the VoIP services and providers.
The main requirement for these regulations is when the VoIP users try to access 911 services. Unavailability of 911 services puts the users at risk. This drawback is due to the fact that VoIP does not use landline wires and that it is not integrated with the Public Safety Emergency 911 system. In the case of a user calling 911 from a traditional landline the specific information of the caller will be displayed at the dispatcher whereas when the same call is made in VoIP the information is not displayed. This proves fatal in emergency situation and the caller will be left alone without being offered any help.
Few of the VoIP providers have come up with enhanced 911 systems but are of little help. The VoIP user can ask for assistance in order to activate or register 911 services. Another hurdle which the user will have to face after registering is when a call is made from any place other than your residence. This makes it extremely difficult or impossible for the user to trace the location.
The only solution for this problem is to have a landline connection or to carry a mobile. This comes in handy if in case situation arises for making 911 calls. On the other hand of you try calling 911 from your VoIP then it will be helpful if you give your local information beforehand.
According to the regulation by FCC it is must for a VoIP provider to sign a statement from subscribers ensuring their awareness regarding 911 calling systems. VoIP services were provided not only by providers but also by even telephony companies are taking up this venture. For example Verizon has just released Voice wing- their VoIP service and Cingular wireless has started a mobile wireless or VoWiFi service.
Time alone can solve the present VoIP issues until then will continue regulations from about through the FCC, court rulings, and from the government. It will take some hard course for them to finding self a position among telecommunications system which have been predominant for 100 years.
