Everyone will be very familiar about the advantages and usability of the VoIP technology. People find VoIP a better budget alternative to PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network).
With the benefits, VoIP also come with certain drawbacks which need to be discussed. VOIP, otherwise known as Internet Telephony uses the most emerging technology internet to make long distanced calls at cheaper rates.
It makes internet calls at relatively low rates. It transforms the voice signal to digital packets and sends them through a series of routers till they reach the recipient.
Drawbacks
Though it is a better budget alternative, people fail to give a satisfactory explanation about its performance. Many companies are satisfied with the VoIP as an economical option but performance-wise they offer mixed responses.
Since its technology is still in its growing stage there will be possible drawbacks. When compared to the PSTN services, people find VoIP unreliable.
Challenges like reliability and performance are faced by this VoIP technology.
Reliability
Another disadvantage with the VOIP is that you cannot use them in the even of power failure. On the other hand PSTN can be used when there is no power supply as they work with other phone systems.
Another factor that determine the performance of VoIP service is the quality of the internet connection.
In case the internet slows down you will not be able to make or receive calls. The performance is further affected by transmission errors, viruses threats and hack attacks.
Performance
PBX systems are used to route the VoIP calls and the quality of this system also determines the calling experience.
At times people will have to reboot the VOIP box before making or receiving a call as they will not hear any dialler tone when you pick the call.
Defective call ID reporting and echo are other problems faced by VoIP. With many exciting problems VoIP may not be appealing to many users. VoIP still has a long way to go.
