To help beginners – Common VoIP terms explained

The new users of VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) may find it difficult to understand the VoIP related terms, as they come across huge amounts of Jargon in most of the literature and articles. In the VoIP phase, a lot of confusing terms are used. In order to make you understand these terms, a simple explanation regarding the same is featured in this article.

Among the various terms used, VoIP is the most important and widely used term. It is actually the short form of Voice over Internet Protocol. VoIP means the ability to make voice calls through the internet. Now let’s take a quick look at the other frequently used terms and their explanations:

1. ATA – When expanded becomes Analogue Telephone adaptor. This being, an electronic device, converts analogue signals into digital signals. The same enable transmission possible over the internet.

2. SIP – It is the acronym to session initiation protocol. This protocol, which is application layered, manages sessions of multimedia communication.

3. Ethernet – This is a transmission protocol which is packet based, and the same is used for LAN’s (local area networks).

4. Codec – Used in IP telephony, Codec is a compression/ decompression algorithm.

5. PSTN – The term when expanded becomes Public Switched Telephone Network. It is nothing but the standard landline phone system.

6. Qos – It is used to denote the quality of service. It means the quality in terms of performance of the transmission system.

7. VoIP Phone – It looks similar to the standard phones and the same gets connected to a PSTN. For facilitating TCP/IP computer network connection, VoIP phones have an Ethernet port.

These are some of the commonly used in VoIP terminology. However, there are numerous acronyms which are not mentioned in this article, as the same is focused towards beginners.
